The history of the United States Army is a long and complex one, with contributions from both Native American and European immigrants. The first military forces in California were organized in 1847, when the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The army was created as part of President Polk's effort to re-establish U.S. control over Mexico following the war. The army was initially small, consisting only of men volunteers from New York City and San Francisco. In 1855, General John C. Fremont founded the California Volunteers regiment, which became known as the Fremont Legionaries after him. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General George Bancroft ordered 1,500 cavalry troopers led by Lieutenant Colonel James WOOLWORTH to protect Sacramento from Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Jackson. After California became an state in 1850, it passed its own laws governing military activity within its borders (in contrast to those of neighboring Nevada). These laws allowed for service by Californians in both armies that fought in Mexican Wars and in the American Civil War; they also authorized purchase of rifles and other weaponry by soldiers stationed within California. In 1861–1865, due to increased tensions across America due to changes taking place on the federal level with respect to slavery (the Missouri Compromise), Congress authorized appropriations for new Military Division No. IX of California (created October 25th 1861), including 2 regiments commanded by Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock: 1st Regiment Yosemite National Park Infantry (equipped with Springfield breechloading rifles) and 2nd Regiment Santa Clara County Infantry (equipped with Sharps rifles). With these two units activated on November 15th 1861 at Fort Tejon just south of Monterey Bay along Calaveras Creek,[1] hostilities between North and South soon escalated into open warfare across much of Northern California.] On December 14th 1861[2], Battle Of Monterrey took place near what is now Downtown Menlo Park following a day-long engagement between Union troops under Major General Nathaniel Lyon[3]and Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Jackson[4]. On February 5th 1862 Union troops surprised Confederate positions at Healdsburg Canyon southeast of Menlo Park before engaging again two days later at Lassen Peak northeast of Menlo Park; this battle saw heavy casualties on both sides as well as skirmishes throughout most of April.[5][6][7][8] Finally engagements took place at Sutter’s Notch northwestof town on May 26th 1862[9] resulting in three dead Yankees plus thirteen wounded Confederates; Union losses are unknown but likely high given their numerical disadvantage against large Confederate formations.] Although outnumbered 3:1,[10] Union troops managed to win several key battles during this time period culminating with victory at Gettysburg four months later; however such successes did not prevent continuing civil unrest throughout Southern California until 1865 when all military operations were stopped except for occasional border patrols.] Withdrawal fromCalifornia began on September 9th 1863 after reports emerged thatSouthern sympathizers had begun withdrawing support forUnion causes westofSacramento.(See below For more Detailed History On This Event) By then there were only a few thousand remaining enlisted men active duty & most men had leftfor various reasons including retirement or home leave.) Menlo Park was founded in 1887 by Alexander Graham Bell and his wife, Anne Wilson. The city was named for the Menlo Woods Reserve, which is located in nearby Santa Clara County. The Belles donated land to the city for a public park and school district. In 1912, Menlo Park became one of the first cities in California to implement an open-air water distribution system. In 1955, Menlo Park became the first city in California to adopt a City Charter with full fledged municipal government. In 1978, Menlo Park voters passed a ballot measure that created a mayor-council form of government. The following year, Mayor George Moscone appointed former San Francisco Supervisor Dianne Feinstein as the first female mayor of Los Angeles. In 1993, Menlo Park voters approved Measure B which proposed building a new stadium for the LA Galaxy soccer team and funded by state Legislature. However, construction never began due to financial problems at local developer AEGOA Inc.. On July 17th of that year Mayor Moscone ordered all city employees not to report to work because he felt they had been unionized against their will by AEGOA Inc.. Construction resumed on October 9th after mediation between Mayor Moscone and AEGOA Inc.. On December 14th of that year Mayor Moscone resigned after being charged with perjury regarding his role in creating Measure B

The name Menlo Park comes from a small wooded valley between San Leandro and Berkeley that was home to many early settlers. In 1868, when Congress passed the National Academy of Sciences Act, Menlo Park became one of the earliest areas in California to be placed under its jurisdiction.
