Menlo Park is a town in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Menlo Park is part of the Palo Alto–Fremont–Hayward area. It lies on both sides of the Santa Clara River and borders Stanford University to the north; Eastman Kodak to the east; and Palo Alto to the south. The first people who lived in Menlo Park were Native American Indians, who occupied lands that now include much of eastern Menlo Park and parts of southeastern Palo Alto. In 1835, Englishman George Stephenson donated two acres (0.8 km²) of land at what is now Menlo Park for a new college called Ballou School. But it was not until 1892 when The Great Western Railroad arrived in town that development really began. On July 1, 1879, Menlo Park was officially incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth in the early 1800s due to its location at the intersection of two major north-south transportation arteries: The Pacific and Stockton Roads. In 1887, Menlo Park annexed neighboring West Palo Alto and San Antonio Lakes. In 1906, Menlo Park became the first city in California to issue municipal bonds. That same year saw the opening of its first movie theater, the Third National. The 1920s were a decade of great growth for Menlo Park; during that time it became one of California's leading cultural centers with many popular nightclubs and restaurants opening up throughout downtown area. In 1934, City Council decided that Menlo Park should become an independent city status which it received on January 1st of 1935. During World War II, Menlo Park played an important role in both military campaigns; during 1942-1945, more than 10% of all manufacturing output within California was produced within the city limits by local companies such as Butterworth Company and Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. After the war ended in 1945,Menlo Park resumed its slow but steady growth rate and by 1957 had reached its current size with over 60 businesses employing over 100 employees!
