In 1868, an Italian immigrant named Giovanni Gaudí designed and built the world’s first true coffee pot. The Gaudí model had a large, deep Sloan boiler that heated water to 212 degrees Fahrenheit and produced around two cups of coffee per hour. By 1912, however, all but one of Europe’s leading espresso houses were using French press machines—a type of coffee maker that requires hot water and ground coffee to be added directly to a small metal or plastic pot called a “pouch.”
Menlo Park is a city in San Francisco County, California. Menlo Park was incorporation on December 12, 1877. The original population of the city was 721 in 1881 but increased to 1,500 by 1901. The City of Menlo Park had a population of 6,752 as of the 2010 census and is located adjacent to Palo Alto. The first men who set foot in what is now Menlo Park were two brothers from Holland: Hendrick Brouwer and Jan van de Velde. They arrived December 12th 1877 and began to plant some trees on the site that would become today's University Avenue. It wasn't until 1888 when an American-born sailor, George Wernham, purchased land next door to the Van de Velde family for $300 which he used for his grocery store and home office. He continued to own this property until his death in 1902. In 1896 anotherAmerican-born sailor named John Davenport bought land adjoining Wernham's grocery store from him for $3 per acre (!!). This location became known as "Davenport Heights." In 1898 Davenport donated 60 acres (25 ha) of this property - bounded by University Avenue on the east side and Mount Diablo Boulevard on the west side - to the City of Menlo Park for use as a parkland extension project called "Park Row". The city then doubled its size by annexing neighboring Santa Clara County! On July 4th 1906 Menlo Park became one of 10 cities nationwide represented at an International Exhibition held at Madison Square Garden in New York City with over 500 exhibitors from 30 countries! That same year President Theodore Roosevelt delivered his famous address before Congress advocating for American entry into World War I! During World War II many businesses closed due to wartime rationing but after Victory Over Japan was declared on September 2nd 1945 all business reopened except groceries! On November 26th 1945 Menlo Park voters passed Proposition G which established rent control ordinances that remain in effect today! "The Seldom Seen Town" After America's entry into World War II most menial jobs were lost due to military enlistment or Civilian Defense activity however according to historian Dr.. Douglas Sperling there remained an important workforce vacuum that was filled beginning in 1944 with employees from Hewlett-Packard Company who constructed their new headquarters building across University Avenue from where they operated outta sight.(Hewlett Packard Co.)
