Menlo Park is a city located in San Francisco County, California. The population of Menlo Park was 66,829 at the 2010 census. It is considered to be one of Silicon Valley's more well-known and affluent neighborhoods. The name Menlo Park comes from two prominent early settlers, Dr. George Menlo and his son John Menlo. The first settlement in what is now Menlo Park was made up of families who arrived from New York City in 1851. By 1861, the town had 50 residents and consisted of a few small businesses and a schoolhouse. By 1865, there were 100 residents living in 12 buildings on three blocks north of Market Street. In 1870, a group of businessmen organized the first municipal government with five commissioners and a clerk/treasurer/fiscal agent called the Board of Supervisors (later renamed the City Council). In 1876, when Stanford University moved to Palo Alto from Redwood City, they began purchasing land near where they now stand on Maynard Road between El Camino Real and Alma Mater Boulevard for their new campus. This area would later become known as Campus Drive. Stanford built their first building – likely an Agricultural Hall – on this land in 1879. During World War II many men worked for Boeing at their plant northeast of downtown Seattle; these workers are often referred to as "Boeing Boys." In 1990 Menlo Park voters passed Proposition Y (A Measure To Establish A Sales Tax On Property And Businesses)" which proposed adding an 8% sales tax on all property transactions within the city limits over $1 million regardless of value including services such as plumbing or electricity used by businesses therein
