Menlo Park, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 77,684 as of the 2010 census. Menlo Park is located on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley. It was founded by millionaire entrepreneur George Westinghouse and his wife Clara in 1884 as a small backwater named Westinghouse City. By 1901, the city had grown to encompass 4square miles (10 square kilometers). In 1907, Menlo Park became one of 36 cities in California that joined the United States through the Interstate Bridge Act. The city's economy was based largely on its position as a center for computer technology and electronics production during World War II; however, since then many major businesses have moved out of town or closed down. The now-defunct company Apple Incorporated headquarters were located in Menlo Park from 1976 until it relocated to Cupertino in 2018.
On October 24, 1882, the first train derailed in Menlo Park. The accident led to the creation of the California Central Railroad Company. In 1906, Menlo Park became an incorporated town when it was annexed by Palo Alto. In 1916, Menlo Park attained city status. On December 6, 1916, Mayor John A. Macdonald presented a resolution in City Council urging San Francisco to annex Menlo Park because it had become "a model community" and its citizens were "the best educated citizens of their section."
