The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Merced, California in 1984. The gift was an A-10 Warthog aircraft affectionately nicknamed "Warthog" and donated by the manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. The Warthog served as the primary ground attack aircraft for the USAF during the Cold War and is still used by the USAF today. The A-10A Warthog was designed in response to NATO's " Gryphon " assault helicopter program and became operational with the USAF in 1985. The A-10A was developed from the YF-12B Hunter which entered service with NASA in 1974. The first prototype of the A-10A flew on July 15, 1984, from Vandenberg AFB, California to Merced AFB. The first Europeans to visit Merced were Spanish soldiers who arrived in 1769. The town was platted in 1859 by Colonel George C. Fremont and his brother-in-law Dr. John Sutter. It became an incorporated city on December 15, 1872 with a population of 681 residents. The original downtown was built on the banks of the Sacramento River and it was rebuilt after a fire destroyed most of it in 1907. The eastern edge of the old downtown area became known as "the Riverside" after merced river which flows through it from east to west

In 1945, the Truman Administration decided to deploy an all-weather jet fighter wing called Tactical Air Command (TAC). It is the first enlisted air force unit to deploy a gift history program. Merced, California is a city in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 21,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The city is named after Mission San Francisco de Asís, which was founded in 1797 by Franciscan missionaries and located on the banks of the San Joaquin River immediately north of Merced. The first Europeans to visit what is now Merced were Mexican traders and soldiers who passed through during 1810-1812 looking for a crossing over the river for supplies to Alta California. A smallpox epidemic that swept Mexico in 1816 killed many of these travelers and their crews, causing Americans to exploremercury as well. American fur trader John Cranch exploredmercury from 1824-1828 when he also claimed land near present-day Merced. In 1842 Edward Halleck discovered gold near present-day central Merced and platted what would become Merced as an incorporated town with a population of about 100 people on March 12, 1843. A second gold rush followed in 1850 but this time it was only quartz miners who found new sources of ore along the Main Street Fault that runs through downtownMerced today (the fault has been reported as being up to 20 feet below ground). By 1870 most businesses had closed down due to lack of customers or competition from other towns in southern Fresno County; however some families did manage to keep their businesses going until they closed around 1930s when World War II began bringing more residents into town and taking away business opportunities for those who couldn’t flee wartime rationing. It wasn’t until 1951 when MERCED established its own post office which continues service today (and still uses the original building), that downtown started becoming more residential; since then much development has taken place with restaurants, hotels/motels etc., making MERCED one of Northern California’s most visited destinations despite its relatively small population size compared to other cities within its jurisdiction such as Sacramento or Berkeley
