Merced, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 21,957 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Merced River and forms part of the Fresno- Merced Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Merced was first populated by Mono people who hunted and gathered game around what is today's downtown area. In 1846, Mission San Francisco de Asís founded a mission here and soon after Spanish missionaries arrived to proselytize among the Mono people. A year later, an American military force under General Don Carlos Manuel de Alvarado attacked the mission; most of its inhabitants were killed or taken captive. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Alvarado claimed ownership of all of California for Mexico; he ordered his troops to burn down Mission San Francisco de Asís (the onlyactive missions in California) but they abandoned their task when they discovered no one was inside. In 1848, during Mexican–American War (1846-1848), John Cranch led a group of soldiers against Alvarado at Dumont Hill near present-day Yosemite National Park while accompanying General Antonio López de Santa Anna as his cavalry general. Mexican forces had surrounded the U.S.-held garrison and began bombardment when Captain John Sutter responded with gunfire that forced them back several hundred yards before withdrawing across the river behind some hills not far from where today's City Hall stands

Merced is a city in butte County, California, United States. The population was 30,873 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Spanish for "place where rivers flow". The city was founded in 1876 on the site of an old mission and is located about 60 miles (100 km) east of Sacramento. It became part of the Greater Los Angeles area after it was incorporated as a city in 1911. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and fished around present-day Merced Valley. They built their first trading posts near what is now downtown Merced in 1788. In 1824, José Joaquin Cámpora found gold here and suggested that it be named after him—Merced means "Place Where Rivers Flow." The discovery changed Merced's fortunes because it opened up new land for farming and cattle raising; this made Merced one of the most important cities in California during its early years. A train depot was built here in 1870 to serve settlers coming into the area from eastern San Francisco Bay Area. In 1886, when Yosemite National Park was created, parts of Butte County were included within Yosemite and so Merced became part of that park as well; today much of downtown still standing date back to this time!
