The United States Army's active duty branch is the Infantry. The Infantry was originally organized as a militia in 1775 and then became an infantry regiment in 1802. The Infantry first served in the Mexican-American War (1846-1847) and participation in that conflict led to its parent corps, the Artillery, being reorganized as a regiment of infantry on 15 May 1852. In World War I (1914-1918), the Infantry fought on both the Western Front and Eastern Front, experiencing significant combat throughout most of Europe. This experience gave rise to the Soldier's Creed which read "I will fight for my country until death do us part". In 1932, the Infantry was redesignated as a brigade Combat Team and then again as a battalion Combat Team effective 1 October 1945. After World War II, there were several changes within the Army with brigade combat teams becoming brigades and battalion combat teams becoming battalions; however, these changes did not generally apply to artillery regiments which continued to be called artillery batteries or field pieces. On 1 October 2007, all artillery regiments were redesignated brigades effective 1 November 2007. As of 2019 there are over 500 active duty infantry battalions and 199 reserve infantry battalions across all branches of service including National Guard units from states such as California and Nevada; this number does not include Armor divisions or armor cavalry divisions which have their own individualorgans inside of larger services like Navy or Air Force.)
