Since the California Coast Guard was established in 1915, it has played an important role in safeguarding the state’s coastline. The guard also provides service to communities along the coast and helps provide emergency response when needed. One of the most distinguishing aspects of Coast Guard gift history is that gifts have often been dedicated to specific members or entities within the agency. This is evident in the many items donated by individual officers or groups over time. In Merced, a particular group has given generously over the years, specifically towards character development for cadets at local high schools. In honor of this longstanding tradition, we are honoring one member of this group with a special gift. We will be sending a plaque to one of our Cadet Leaders at Desert Vista High School who has been an extremely generous donor to Coast Guard programs over the years. Merced, California is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 103,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Kern County and the second largest city in Kern County after Bakersfield. The name of the city comes from Spanish General Manuel de la Hoz y Costilla, who named it San Miguel de Merced after his patron saint, Mary of the Cross. The area that now makes up Merced was first inhabited by Mono people. In 1848 they were driven out by Mexican Rangers under Captain José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla. In 1851 Californians founded El Dorado Springs on Rancho Rinconada east of modern-day Merced and called it Fort Yuma because of its location on an high mountain peak near what is now downtown El Paso. A post office operated at El Dorado Springs from 1850 to 1857. In 1864–65, during the American Civil War, General James Longstreet’s Confederate army passed through central Kern County and stopped at two forks in the railroad path: one near today’s Needles and another just north of where Merced now stands about 12 miles northeast of Reno Junction onnowah Valley Rd., known as “Bloody Ridge Road” because so many men died there during that battle Onlookers on Bloody Ridge saw dead Union soldiers intermingling with Native Americans whom they took captive before being marched south to their respective reservations across Nevada Country; some were never seen again or even known to exist until after white settlers arrived in those parts Some 20 years later when Northern troops reached Needles following Battle Of Bear River (1862), General John Custer ordered his cavalry units to enter town square and burn all buildings including Mission churches; however most historians believe this event never happened as no contemporary documentation supports such a claim mercedes california
The Coast Guard has been providing services to the American people for over 100 years. In that time, they have become one of the most iconic and well-known organizations in the United States. The Coast Guard is responsible for protecting our coastline, waters and airspace, as well as responding to any emergencies or disasters. Some of the earliest examples of Coast Guard gift history can be traced back to 1892 when a group of sailors from New York City founded the first Coast Guard station in California. From then on, gifts from citizens of all backgrounds were common andacts such as Christmas cards, flowers, candy bars and other snacks were often sent to members of the Coast Guards. In 1916, Congress passed an act entitled “An Act To Establish a Coast Guard” which created the United States today’s Coast Guard by merging several existing agencies. The first Commandant was Rear Admiral John Foston who served until 1946. Since then there have been many distinguished Commandants including Admiral Michael Collins (2002-2006), Rear Admiral Jonathan Greenert (2007-2010) and Rear Admiral Timothy Laine (2011-2015). It is interesting to note that only two women have ever served as Commandants; First Lady Hillary Clinton (2009-2013) andcurrent Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Sylvia Rivera (2010-present). In 2017, President Donald J. Trump signed into law The National Defense Authorization Act which changed how donations are processed for both active duty members and their families membersthat fall within the jurisdiction of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This amendment allows more flexibility when it comes to gift donation so that individuals can make a difference in support of their loved ones service with NOAA! The cutter continued to be gifts and donations from nations around the world until it was retired in 1978. Merced is a city in California, United States. The population was 149,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Merced County and contains part of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley metropolitan area. The city is on the east side of the San Joaquin River and about 120 miles (193 km) north of San Francisco. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Merced County were Spanish missionaries who founded Mission Santa Cruz de la Sierra in 1797. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and incorporation as Fresno County occurred; however, Mexican land claims continued to be made against Californias until 1848 when California became a territory of the United States. In 1858, following Gold Rush discoveries at Sutter's Mill and Stockton, merced was named after Don José Antonio Márquez y Teran for his leadership in organizing these events. A post office called Merced has been open since 1859. The name "merced" originates with an Alta California Rancho which occupied land between El Centro and Morongo Bayou west of present-day Merced City limits. The first Europeans to visit what is now Merced County were the Spanish in 1642. In 1853, the United States acquired it from Mexico. The county was named for General Mariano Cámpora, who fought in the Mexican-American War and received an award from President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942.
