Merced is a small town in central California, located about twenty-five miles north of Sacramento. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is the home of UC Merced, one of the largest universities in California. The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and was first settled by Missionaries in 1776. Merced’s name is derived from Spanish meaning “ plentiful stream” and it was given to the settlement because it drained a marsh near where it presently stands. The early history of Merced can be traced back to 1821 when Captain John Sutter founded the Rancho Sacramento de las Animas (later known as Rancho San Antonio) on what is now the east side of I-5 just south of downtown Merced. In 1846, Charles Waddell sold land south of downtown to Nathaniel Hawthorne who named it after his friend General Manuel Micheltorena. Micheltorena had served as lieutenant governor under Mexican president Vicente Guerrero and later became one of America's most prominent mapmakers during its Gold Rush era. In 1853, when Nevada became a state, merced became part of that state and ultimately Californias second congressional district. In 1912, mercedes merged with other towns in central CA to form an unincorporated community called Dos Pueblos which still exists today as a ghost town outside Ofcachi Reservoir National Monument (formerly Yosemite National Park).
