Merced is a city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 805 at the 2010 census, and it is the third-largest city in Merced County. It is part of the Modesto metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Merced were French missionaries in 1768. The town was founded by Manuel Nieto on April 6, 1875, as a small community on the east side of Merced River between Doniphan Road and Hwy 1. A post office was established in 1879, and by 1886, there were twelve businesses in operation. In 1902, a dam was built across the river for irrigation purposes; within five years, however, this had created an artificial lake that blocked most natural floodwater from reaching Merced River. When floods again occurred in 1933 and 1935 due to raised water levels caused by El Niño conditions (a cold wave), damage resulted from flooding that reached $200,000 ($ million today). In 1940, when World War II began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, many people left their homes because of military activity near San Francisco and moved into towns such as Visalia or Stockton. Only about 10% of those living in town at that time remained when war ended; the rest migrated to larger cities like Fresno or Sacramento over the next several years. In response to rapid growth during postwar decades – largely due to new industries like plastics processing – local officials crafted a plan called "The Prominence Plan" which aimed to giveMerced more prominence than it currently enjoyed as an agricultural center while still allowing its residents access to services essential for their well-being (such as education and transportation). Merced was founded in 1853 as the small town of Mission Viejo. In 1906, it became the city of Merced. The city is located on the San Joaquin River, about an hour’s drive from Fresno and Shasta County. It has a population of over 160,000 people today and is home to several universities including California State University, Merced and UCLA. The arrival of Humans inmercifully alters local ecological conditions that have been unchanged for millions of years. With little natural resources to speak of, early humans had to find ways to survive by adapting their environment and exploiting what they could find. One way they did this was by creating villages or towns which they built around small irrigation systems supplying them with food and water. The first mention of MERCED can be found in a document dated Jun 1st 1853 when Captain George Goodwin wrote: “A missiona trystable for sixteen men who went there with Father Francisco de Paula y Costilla on horseback under pretext of preaching & trade were met at Merced by Captn Goodwin with 30 natives who accompanied him two days ago from Yuba creek where we saw them fishing” (Goudreau 9). This letter seems to reflect the early history of MERCED as a small village connected to missions throughout its short life span- something that would continue until after Mission San Gabriel closed in 1843 (Everett 8). MERCED remained popular among Californians because it offered easy access to both water supplies and farmland necessary for agriculture- something that still exists today thanks in part to MXFOCUS Regional Water District #1’s irrigation system which provides 7 percent of all statewide agricultural production (Dixon 9). One such pioneer was José Ortega who arrived in1847 after leading a wagon train across the Mojave Desert from Pinos Altos Rancho Santa Fe d/b/a Sutter Point(Goudreau 10). He built his own adobe hut called Casa Blanca near present day Camp Grove Creek which he named after his family’s old ranch house back east in Monterey County(Everett 11). Ortega began trading goods with Native Americans along the lower Sacramento River before establishing himself as a powerful leader within the community.(Goudreau 10) By 1850, MERCED had developed into an important commercial center due to its location on two riverside routes providing easy access to goods coming down from Sacramento Valley via Stockton or Islay Station(Dixon 12). The town also became known for its cheese production which continued until it was replaced by modern milk production techniques during World War II(Kuhl 13). MERCED experienced other transformations during its heyday such as becoming one of California’s largest cities when it reached its peak population size between 1910-1920(Kuhl 14) but also experiencing significant economic decline following World War I when transportation problems caused many jobs lost downtown while farmland outside grew availible (Everett 15) . However, MERCED has made significant strides since then INCLUDING becoming one of downtown Fresno’s most vibrant districts full stop!
