Merced is a small city in Merced County, California, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The name may be derived from Spanish for "headwaters of the river Kern", or "river that flows through Merced". The first Europeans to visit what is now Merced were two Jesuit priests, Father Junípero Serra and Father Francisco Xavier Menéndez de Avilés, in 1769 and 1770. They named the river after San Miguel de Allende, an Indian chief who had helped them find their way across Baja California on their way to Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1843, Captain Edward Stevens discovered gold near where modern-day Merced stands and he decided to build a town around it. He named it Sacramento but later changed it to Merced because of its headwaters—the Kern River. Merced grew rapidly during World War II as local farmers produced goods for the war effort including meat, flour, soybeans and other beans, gasoline oil and other materials needed by military forces stationed in nearby Fresno and Stockton. Some 20% of the city's workforce was employed in Industry; most notably within munitions manufacturing throughout much of postwar decades until 1979 when they switched entirely to service-based economy with some remaining in industry until recently (manufacturing jobs have since been lost in neighboring Puebla). After years of decline due largely to technological advances (factory closures throughout 1990s), MERCED has started to experience resurgence in recent years as technology companies such as Apple Inc., Google Inc., Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., LinkedIn Corp., Oracle Corporation laid off employees there overcapacity; this trend continues even as Employment growth among tech workers nationally slowed somewhat post-recession trough 2011 In 2013 MERCED began experiencing significant gentrification with multi-million dollar home sales beginning popping up all around town although many units remained affordable for low income residents especially given current market conditions MERCED has experienced a variety of success stories from its humble beginnings: becoming one of Californias top commuter cities ranking third behind Riverside/San Bernardino/Ontario and Orange County; being selected by President Obama as a recipient of his “America’s Great Cities” award; hosting world championships events like soccer’s FIFA U19 World Cup™ in 2002 & 2006; becoming home to several major college sports teams including Cal Poly Pomona Trojans & UC Davis Bulldogs basketball programs
