Merced, California is a small city located in Fresno County, California. The population was 39,541 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-smallest city in California and the third-smallest city in San Joaquin County. As of the 2015 United States Census, Merced had a population of 41,913. The first people to settle in what is now Merced were Native American traders who traveled from Sonoma County on horseback to trade with Missionaries and other settlers near Tulare Lake.
