Merced is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 34,514 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city east of San Francisco and the second-largest city in Northern California after Berkeley. The city was founded on July 24, 1853 by Horace Greeley and David Goodyear as a small station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and Alameda. Merced became an incorporated town on February 12, 1887. The first post office in Merced opened on December 8, 1856. The original town was located near what is now downtown Merced; it included only a single block of land west of present-day Market Street. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad built a new line from Sacramento to Merced; this made local farmers available for shipment of goods to Stockton and other cities on the Great Western Railroad network. During World War II, Merced was one of the most Bombed towns in California because of its location within easy reach of other military installations. However, despite being bombed many times, the town remained largely unscathed and by 1945 had recovered enough to re-opened as a thriving community.
