Merced, California is a small town in El Dorado County, California, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Kern County and the second-most populous city in Fresno County. The first permanent settler in what is now Merced was José Joaquin Murrieta on November 17, 1847. A post office called Merced was established in 1851, and remained open until 1907. Rancho Viejo de los Andes was patented to Francisco Palou on October 6, 1850; it included land that includes parts of what are now downtown Merced as well as portions of today's south end of City Park. Palou sold part of his ranch to John Sutter on January 24, 1852 for $5 per acre ($ 20 million at current prices). The merced valley began to be populated by Native Americans from around 1000 BC when they cached goods near present-day Yosemite National Park while traveling up the San Joaquin River. In 1800s Mission San Fernando Rey served as a spiritual center for many Yokuts people who were regionally nomadic and hunted game such as deer and bear. Over time their religious affiliation changed but their physical presence increased because they developed new irrigation systems and built farms able to produce vegetables, fruits and nuts which became local staples and supported large livestock populations that were also used for meatpacking purposes. Thereafter farming settlements gradually grew throughout much of central California due to easy access to water resources (especially during droughts) as well as cheap labor from Native American workers who came overland through missions or overland trade routes following Indian trails northward into southern Oregon and Mexico proper (the Santa Fe Trail followed ancient trade routes connecting various cultures including Spain with Native American traders traveling along the Mexican coast). By 1905 there were over 300 businesses operating in downtown Merced with a population density of more than 1,000 people/acre!
