On November 16, 1912 crews working on a new dam on the Sacramento River broke through an existing smaller dam near present-day MERCED and began uncontrolled flooding that destroyed much of downtown Merced including much valuable property including numerous churches and businesses dating back to pre-contact days around this time In 1927 MERCED annexed part of eastern Yreka Township which eventually formed Walnut Creek Unified School District today while still retaining its own name; however annexation did not bring any revenue benefits primarily because there are no water rights available withinMERCED's boundaries during dry years unlike neighboring towns which enjoyed ample access to both water supplies via ditches dug along their rivers etc... The last major event significant enough to change Merced's demographics occurred almost fifty years later when Interstate 5 bypassingmercredwas constructed just south of townforming what would become known as "the inner ring road". This large engineering project changed all aspectsof life insideMERCED with developers moving into previously vacant buildings while farmers left for greener pastures outside thecity limits
