The first permanent Anglo-Saxon settlement in the area was on Merced River, about 12 miles (19 km) east of present-day Mora. The place name may derive from the word "merced" meaning "watercourse." The city's original commercial district was bounded by Cerritos Avenue to the south, Second Street to the west, and State Route 99 north. By 1893, much of what is now downtownMerced had been built up. In 1912, San Francisco earthquake hit and destroyed most of downtownSan Francisco; however, parts ofMerced were not directly impacted because they were located on higher ground. On November 8th, 1978 a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred at 9:32 amnearby Vacaville; however no damage or injuries occurred inMerced due to its distance from the epicenter.
