The Marines in Merced, California have been deployed for peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance since the early 1900s. The unit was first organized in 1898 as a company of sailors and marines from San Francisco. It was redesignated as an Infantry battalion in 1916, then an Infantry regiment in 1942. The Marines currently serve in three main branches: the Marine Barracks Battalion (3rd Brigade), which is responsible for garrisoning military installations; the Headquarters Battalion (1st Brigade) which is responsible for all operational commands; and the Special Purpose Marine detachment (SPMD) which provides counterterrorism and counterdrug operations. Merced is a city in central California, United States. The population was 93,907 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city by population in California and the seventh-largest city in California as of 2017. With a land area of just under 22 square miles (59 km²), it occupies a small corner of San Joaquin Valley between Fresno and Bakersfield. The history of Merced goes back to 1849 when Don Francisco de la Vega surveyed what is now Merced County with land that later became part of Alta California. In 1852, Merced was founded as an agricultural town on the banks of the Río Santa Cruz River by ranchers who believed irrigation could be developed there. The town grew rapidly during the early years of goldmining in Northern Californias Mono Basin region; over $1 million worth of gold was found here in 1860 alone. By 1870, however, much ofMERCED had been destroyed by fire or flooding from nearby rivers and streams caused by flash floods during winter rains. A new settlement began to grow up around Merced Creek where residents built homes made out of adobe and straw bale although some were also built with logs or other materials brought downriver from El Dorado Hills and Yuba City for use as lumber mills or charcoal kilns. Mill Village reached its peak development around 1900 with about 100 residences but declined after World War I because production fell victim to increased automation at these mills which also led to job losses for many people who depended on them for their livelihoods; the last mill closed in 1922 following a competition among American industry to become more efficient at producing goods using riverine transportation methods instead of men working on horses or donkeys pulling wagons over rough trails). Over timeMERCED has annexed additional municipalities including: Antioch (1924), Lafayette (1948), Redding(1968), Walnut Creek (1970), Eureka(1972), Pleasant Hill(1975) Pinole(1978)and Dublin (1991). Today MERCED has jurisdiction over 9 townships plus unincorporated areas outside its limits resulting in a total area burden exceeding 2 million acres (.93%of CA's land mass).

Merced is a small town in central California, located about 20 miles east of Yosemite National Park. The name means "water of the gods" in Spanish. The community was founded by the Russian Empire in 1848 as a settlement on the southern slopes of Mount Hamilton, now part of Yosemite National Park. It became an American townsite in 1872 when it was laid out by surveyor George Washington Smith. By 1900, Merced had a population of about 930 people and was composed primarily of agricultural workers and their families. However, during World War II, Merced became an important manufacturing center for munitions production at nearby Folsom Arsenal. The war also helped to spur growth in the town, which reached its peak population count of 1,500 people in 1950. However, after the war ended and jobs lost from industry declined overall, Merced's population dropped to 500 people by 1970. In recent decades, however, life has returned to normalcy with modest growth rates and increasing suburban development around the town center. The history of Merced begins with its founding by Russia in 1848 as a settlement on Mount Hamilton near Yosemite National Park as part of what would become known as California's Central Valley region (now Nevada). At first it consisted only of soldiers and their families who were assigned to live there until they could be transferred back home; this proved very practical because there was no water available anywhere else within 10 miles (16 km) radius of where they were stationed! In 1871 when American settlements were established throughout California following gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill and others along the Sacramento River valley floor*,Merced became one such colony†(*See historical notes below). The first permanent settler in Merced County was George C. Smith, who arrived in 1847. In 1853, the county was organized from part of Fresno County. The population of Merced County grew rapidly following the Gold Rush and as a result, new towns were founded throughout the county. By 1880, there were 30 villages and towns in Merced County. The most important town during this time was Atwater, which became a city in 1908.
