The armory was built in 1915 and became operational during World War II as a munitions plant. It produced shells, bombs, and other munitions for the war effort. The armory also served as a base of operations for military units stationed in the area. Units such as the 601st Parachute Infantry Regiment and 318th Troop Carrier Squadron were based at the armory during World War II. The armory closed its doors in 1957 but it is still remembered today for its role in wartime Merced.

The first post office in town was opened in 1868. The United States Military Academy at West Point was founded in 1869 andMerced became one of its six original campuses. The United States Naval Academy also located in Merced from 1879-1985. In 1917, World War I began with the Zimmermann Telegram Crisis and Merced served as an important communications hub between San Francisco Bay Area cities and Washington D.C.. During World War II, Merced played an important role both as a munitions plant and as a military base for various campaigns including Guadalcanal and Okinawa.
Merced is a small town in the central Sierra Nevada foothills of California. It is located on the Merced River, about 20 miles north of Yosemite National Park and 30 miles south of Fresno. The population was 12,868 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1851 by George Hildebrandt, who named it for his maternal grandfather, Emperor Napoleon III of France. During the Gold Rush of 1848-49, Merced became one of the most important towns in California because it had an ample supply of goods needed to support thousands of miners and their families. In 1855, Merced became home to one of California's first schools when John Cranch donated land for a schoolhouse. In 1865, James Waddell laid out what is now downtown Merced and named it after his father-in-law, General Edmund Burton Eaton (1814-1886). During World War II, much effort went into manufacturing munitions here including radar equipment and fighter planes used in the war against Japan; however much has been lost since then due to merriment such as churches that were razed or replaced with luxury apartments during this time period; however many interesting buildings remain including a creamery built in 1907 which still stands today as part of Old Townmercado’s grocery store complex; also remaining from this era are some beautiful residences dating back to before incorporation into town (such as Noe Valley), but which have been completely destroyed or greatly altered over time (e.g.,blocking off street corners) while others have been remodeled/restored (such as Oneonta Avenue), making it one very unique community today both inside and outside its boundaries

Merced is a small town in central California, United States. The population was 5,481 at the 2010 census. It is located in Monterey County. The name of the town comes from Spanish missionaries who came to its area in 1847 and named it "México". The first European to visitmerced was José Joaquin Crespo on July 25, 1847. The original Mission San Miguel de Merced (founded in 1769) was abandoned by the Mexican government after a battle with Native Americans near present-day Santa Cruz in 1834. A newMission was built nearby, known as Mission Concepción del Valle (1797), but this also fell victim to suppression by Mexico's secular government and abandonment by missionaries until 1847 when a group of Franciscans founded Mission San Miguel de Merced again under Father Antonio Sanchez y Ulloa. The twin missions were both completed and dedicated on December 20,1847 by Governor Felipe De la Torre y Costilla y Pacheco following an invasion of the Mexican state of Alta California led by General José Joaquín Crespo that same year. In 1850 merced had 2 stores, 1 hotel and 4 inhabitants; although at that time there was no railroad service through monterey county between san Francisco and las Vegas so goods traveled long distances including 50 miles round trip via cattle drive over 5000 feet high mountain passes including snowcapped peaks In 1861 merce had 8 residents; however due to gold rush rushes during the 1860s mercurial growth continued with more people born than died until 1960 when mercurial decline began which has continued to this day
Merced County was created on November 3, 1853, from portions of Mono and Tuolumne counties. The county seat was Merced. The population in 1860 was 4,711.
