Merced, California is a city in central California and the seat of Merced County. The population was 1,763 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Sacramento River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Sacramento. The current name of Merced was given to the settlement by Spanish missionaries in 1847 after they discovered gold near what is now Merced Lake. The original Kumey's Landing site was just across from where modern-day Merced sits. This year-round village was founded by Captain James Hutton with his family in 1851 as a trading post on the banks of the Sacramento River opposite present-day Highland Park. Merced developed rapidly as an agricultural center during its early years, with land being bought and sold for agriculture, ranching, lumber and other purposes until it became one of the leading cities in California during World War II when its production helped support both war efforts and postwar reconstruction. After experiencing rapid growth following World War II, San Francisco's largest city eclipsed Merced's population size by 2001 but has since regained some ground; however, Mercd remains one of California's most populous communities outside Los Angeles or San Diego. Today’s economy revolves around technology companies such as Apple Inc., Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 v3 processors and NVIDIA Tegra processors found within data centers around Northern California as well as global services businesses such as Salesforce Cloud and Oracle Corporation’s Sun Microsystems division headquartered in nearby Redwood City.

Merced is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 34,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. In 1851, Merced was founded as an agricultural town by Missionaries of the Crossroads chain, and later became part of Tulare County. The first white person to live in what is now Merced was John Sutter on July 10, 1851. He built his adobe rancho there and began growing grapes for wine. A post office called Merced was established in 1859, and the name changed to Merced in 1865 when it became a city.[1] The City Council adopted resolutions recognizing Chinese American heritage on October 15th, 1888,[2] which led to increasing numbers of Chinatown businesses opening up near the city limits throughout the 1890s until they were shut down during prohibition raids by the US government in 1920-1924.[3][4][5] By 1925 however most Chinatown businesses had reopened following passage of Proposition 8 which repealed California's anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBT people[6][7][8]. The last major active Chinatown business closed down in 1990 after years of decline due to gentrification and changes within San Francisco's gay community;[9][10] however some remnants remain today including a few small restaurants serving Cantonese food (and sometimes featuring drag queens).[11] As Silicon Valley grew more diversified during its early days with technology firms such as Apple Inc., Google+, Facebook etc., many engineers or employees relocated from Silicon Valley into towns or cities closer to their work places like Oakland or Los Angeles due to cheaper housing prices and easier commute times.
