Merced, California is a city in the Central Valley of California. It is the seat of Merced County and was established in 1852 as part of the Donner Party's attempt to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains from northern California. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. The name "Merced" comes from Spanish meaning "water source." The city began as a small station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Sacramento and San Francisco. By 1870, it had developed into a prosperous town with an agricultural economy that produced corn, wheat, barley, hay, and other crops. In 1912, Merced became one of sixteen United States cities to become self-governing under the twelfth amendment to the United States Constitution. Merced, California is a city in the Central Valley of California and the county seat of Merced County. The population was 10,822 at the 2010 census. The site of present-day Merced was first occupied by Mono people in about 1800. A post office called Merced was established in 1858, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1871, gold was discovered near what is now Merced and nearby San Miguel de Allende, and mercerization started soon after to extract gold from local soil. In 1877, photographer George Catlin made an images known as the "Maderas". The discovery of oil onshore at Pleasanton helped spur both economic development and tourism growth throughout much of Northern California during the 1970s and 1980s. Eventually all production ceased except for a small amount exported to Mexico City until 1986 when natural gas prices collapsed following the Soviet Union's collapse. After years of planning by local officials and investors, Interstate 5 became realigned in 1990 providing more direct access to downtown Modesto than before while also increasing business opportunities for downtown businesses since no longer would they have to compete with businesses located miles away on I-5 or other arterial roads.
