The name of the city comes from Spanish Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and means "sanctuary." The first European to visit Merced was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1769. In 1821, Mexican land grant Rancho Buena Vista was given to José Joaquín Baca for his rancho near present day Merced.
