The population was 8,874 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Merced were the Chumash Indians who occupied the area from around 1800 to 1810. A ranch called Rancho San Rafael was established by Spanish settlers in 1847, but it was abandoned in 1849 when Mexico gained independence from Spain. In 1865, James Irvine patented a land claim including present-day Merced County. The town site was surveyed in 1870 by George Morrison and named Irvine afterhimself. The original town (now part of downtown) had no buildings other than a store and three plank on posts fence roads that led north to Merida cattle ranch east of Coyote Creek which then led south to Needles (now Visalia). In 1871, fire destroyed most of the town core so newIrvine began as an agricultural community with stores, restaurants, doctor’s office and school. People here started referring to themselves as “Irvineites” or “ mercedians” because they were locally owned businesses and residences only went up for sale by appointment unless somebody could personally buy them outright like some did later on with Rancho Santa Anita outside Los Angeles This also helped spur development eastward along I-5 throughmerced while helping keep things small so less money would go into building more extensive suburbs such as Jurupa Valley or Escondido just 100 miles away
