The United States Air Force was founded on August 29, 1947 as the third branch of the United States Armed Forces. The USAF stands for “the best that America can offer” and it is through our efforts that America has been able to secure its position as one of the leading forces in the world. One of the most popular aspects of military life for service members and their families is receiving a gift from an air force member or family member. The Mill Valley Air Force Base gift history begins in the early 1940s with a small gifts store on the base. In 1947, the air force opened its first wing at Mill Valley and began giving out gifts to its members. The base gift store continued to be open until 1973. In that year, the air force closed its gift store and all of its wing's stores.
Mill Valley, California is a small town located in the east side of San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 17,500 at the 2010 census. Mill Valley has been inhabited by the Ohlone nation since before the arrival of Europeans. The first European to visit Mill Valley was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1542. The town was founded by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1857 as a result of his investment in Rancho San Pablo and his land holdings there. At its peak it had a population of about 100 people. The heyday of Mill Valley came during World War II when the munitions plant operated by General Electric became one of the largest employers in town with over 1,000 workers. It also attracted many officers from nearby military bases such as Alcatraz and Fort Mason who lived and worked within mill boundaries on farms near Dun recommended that they remain anonymous until after their discharge from service because “the general public would never know where these men got their supplies for their uniforms” (Fletcher). In recent years, however, Rust Belt nostalgia has taken hold as businesses have closed or been sold off around town due to competition from online sales and other forms of retail growth. Rural residents have begun moving into Mill Valley while city dwellers continue to leave to find more affordable housing options outside of downtown or rural areas such as Walnut Creek or Rocklin. In addition, new development is taking place adjacent to downtown including an apartment complex called "The Commons," which will be home to thousands more people once it is completed next year; and a mixed-use project known as "CenturyLink Park." With few job options available within close range for most people, Downtown Mill Valley may become increasingly irrelevant if not extinct within 10 years or so given current trends (Lopez).

Mill Valley, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1847 by John Sutter and his partners. The town became an important center for agriculture in the early days of California. In 1916, Mill Valley was renamed after George Custer, who had died during the American Civil War. The town has experienced some dramatic changes over the years. In 1924, Mill Valley was destroyed by fire; in 1969, it became one of the first towns to be incorporated as a city; and in 2001, it amalgamated with nearby cities of Redding and Antioch to form Merced County. Mill Valley is home to many notable residents, including author Jann Wenner, actor Jeff Bridges, and entrepreneur Gavin Newsom.
The Mill Valley area was first populated by the Lassen people in the late 18th century. The first mill was built on the current site of the old Village of Mill Valley in 1795. The village was founded by Jedediah Lassen, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the First National Bank, and his wife Rebecca. By 1800, there were six mills in the valley. The first mill on the banks of the River Tonsil was built by Nicholas Hildebrandt in 1821. In 1830, John Sutter erected a flourmill on Castle Hill (now Northvale) Road to supply his new settlement at Sacramento. Over time, other settlers arrived in Mill Valley and began to build homes, businesses, and schools. By 1860 there were over 100 businesses operating in Mill Valley. In 1865, California became a state; Mill Valley became part of Contra Costa County. During World War II, many local businesses helped support military operations throughout California; some still do today. After World War II ended, many residents moved away from MillValley due to federal tax demands and economic decline around town during this time period
