The area around today's Fort Point became known as "Kearney Vale" after General Kearny's successor, Lieutenant Colonel James K!attan (1802-1873). In 1870, Michael and John Milligan moved their lumber business from Sausalito to Mill Valley so that they could continue producing lumber products grown on their property near Genesee Creek. This new mill town quickly became established as a center for logging operations in Northern California due to its fertile soil and well-maintained roads. By 1880, mills had been built across the street from each other in downtown Mill Valley – making it possible for workers to get supplies directly from mills rather than having them transport goods hundreds or even thousands of miles round trip
