The first coffee shop in Mill Valley, California was founded in 1897 by two Italian immigrants, Giovanni and Francesco Giannini. They opened a small café called the Piazza alla Scala on the corner of First Street and Mission Avenue. This company became one of the country's leading coffee roasters for over fifty years. In 1946, Mill Valley resident DonatellO DeBenedictus started working at his father's printing shop on First Street. He began to experiment with brewing coffee and eventually developed what would become known as De Benedetti Coffee. In 1957, he sold his printshop to Remo Ghirardelli and changed the name to Ghirardelli & De Benedicti Coffee Company. Ghirardelli & De Benedicti has been in business ever since, continuing to roast world-famous quality coffees under their own name as well as sell their products directly to consumers around the world. Today Ghirardelli & De Benedicti is considered one of America's leading coffee companies with a presence in over 150 countries worldwide.

Mill Valley, California is a small town located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County. The population was just over 10,000 at the 2010 census. Mill Valley was founded in 1884 by John A. Miller and his wife Lillie B. Miller as a small farming community located on the west bank of the Mill Creek near what is now center City Drive and Old Mill Road. In 1915, when General Electric began production at its new plant in nearby West Covina, CA, mill owners developed a distribution system to bring GE products to local retailers throughout southern California. As other executives of GE relocated their families to suburban New York City or Boston during the Depression years, mill owners made good on their promise to maintain economic vitality by expanding production and building new plants until 1955 when they retired altogether. Today mills produce agricultural supplies such as flour, cornmeal and diesel fuel; materials for housing; and fabricated metal products including gates and railings for businesses and homes around the county.
