Mill Valley, California is a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California. Situated on the banks of the San Joaquin River, it straddles the border of Contra Costa County and Alameda County. The population was 14,826 at the 2010 census. Mill Valley has been called "the most picturesque place in Northern California." According to Forbes Magazine, "the valley's centerpiece is its millstream—a deep canyon that flows through rolling hills and forms part of Silicon Valley's eastern boundary." The first Europeans to visit Mill Valley were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1824. They named it for John Denton (1785-1855), an American Fur trader who had settled there in 1821. A post office was established at Mill Valley on December 15, 1827, and became operational on March 1, 1830. In 1868, a group of farmers purchased land east of the mill stream from John Sutter and founded what would become Redwood City. In 1865, two brothers named George and George Haggerty began operating a sawmill along the mill stream.. Over time other businesses were opened such as a bakery (1872), carpenter shop (1901), shoe store (1910), hotel (1925), grocery store (1930) and agricultural products company (1945). The last business closed in 1984 when Pacific Bell merged with Telecommunications Company of America creating AT&T Corporation. As Silicon Valley grew into one of North America's leading technology companies during the late 20th century and into recent decades as well, Mill Valley experienced rapid growth with new development - including several high-rise buildings built between 1991-1994 on land once belonging to dairy farmer Frank Drake - which created traffic congestion on nearby Interstate 80 all day long during rush hours. However since then there have been few large developments or major road projects conducted within Mill Valley itself save for some widening/ resurfacing efforts around I-80/580; this has helped force further suburbanization within walking distance while also increasing access to employment opportunities outside of town by providing more frequent shuttle service from downtown San Francisco via BART station across University Avenue into town limits
