During World War II, many small businesses closed because of increased demand for war production goods from Europe but those that survived turned their attention to agriculture with a new irrigation system begun in 1951 called "The Green Revolution." Today Mill Valley's economy revolves around its agricultural sector with crops like almonds, grapes, apples and pistachios accounting for most of its revenue. A large shopping mall opened up near downtown Mill Valleys center in 1977 which has since been replaced by an even larger development known as Southtown Center which includes a hotel and several restaurant chains such as Olive Garden/Pizza Hut/Applebee's etc.. Southtowns growth has led to concerns about how much space will be left open inside the mall once all that development takes place; however current plans call foralling most or all mall functions inside Southtown Center while still using portions of the old mall building for housing and other commercial uses outside; making it likely that either or both structures will remain active through at least some future years given that they are neither being used nor threatened by developers anymore
