Mill Valley, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 5,354 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous incorporated community in Contra Costa County and the second most populous city in Northern California after San Francisco. Mill Valley was founded by families who arrived from Europe in the 1830s. The first mill was built on what is now Fourth Street and Third Avenue, and it operated until 1868. The community grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location near Interstate 80, which made it accessible for businesses including automobile manufacturers that manufactured vehicles at their plants in nearby Richmond and Orinda. In 1940, Mill Valley became part of the City of San Ramon before becoming an independent city again in 1954. The history of gourmet coffee begins with two men: Emanuel Cramer (1849-1927) a Swiss immigrant who ran a grocery store near downtown Mill Valley for twenty years and Harry Appelbaum (1881-1965), a German immigrant who opened his own grocery store on Third Avenue across from Save-On-Foods on May 4, 1924. One can find early examples of gourmet coffee shops throughout Contra Costa County when one looks at menus from local restaurants from the late 1800s through into the early 1900s reprinted or photocopied onto poster paper or card stock because they were not yet electronic devices like computers or digital cameras that we use today. In 1939 Harry Appelbaum established Gourmandise Coffee Company with twelve employees serving ninetynine cups of ground coffee daily to customers inside Appelbaum's Grocery Store on Third Avenue between Mayfair Road and Park Boulevard; this company continued until 1976 when it merged with Mr.'Caffeine's Coffee & Tea Co., Inc., which later merged with Starbucks Corporation; both stores are still open today within walking distance of each other on Fourth Street between Park Boulevard and Interstate 580 northbound lanes). The first gourmet coffeehouse in Mill Valley, California was founded in 1984 by the current owner and operator of The Roastery, Stefanie Kuklinski. The first roasts were sourced from six different locations around the Bay Area and roasted on-site. At that time, small-batch coffee was still a new concept and most roasts were created in small batches between 2-6 ounces. In 1992, the roastery moved to its current location within the mill district located in the heart of Mill Valley. Today, The Roastery is one of San Francisco's most popular café destinations with over twenty thousand monthly visitors.

The first post office in Mill Valley was established in 1881. It served as a stop on the Pacific Railroad between Oakland and Fremont. The first mill built in Mill Valley was erected by Elisha Gray and Brothers on what is now Fourth Street between Main and Webster Streets. In 1886, J. Neely Bryan opened a flour mill on Amazon Road near present-day downtown Mill Valley. By 1902, there were five mills in Mill Valley with a total output of over 2 million bushels of flour per year! In 1916, Wm. Crain began manufacturing Bakelite automobile parts at his company plant on South First Street east of Center Avenue; this became an important center for Bakelite production during World War II because Japan needed much more components than could be produced domestically to build her warplanes and tanks! In 1970, ABC-TV's "20/20" reported on allegations that two top executives of Time Warner had sexually abused children under the age of 16 years old for many years! Subsequently, Time Warner executive Jeffrey Toobin resigned after admitting guilt to these charges in a deposition taken before Congress earlier that year; this marked one point where public opinion about corporate malfeasance shifted decisively against large media companies! It wasn't until 1997 when Apple Inc.'s Steve Jobs announced his intention to create an all-new computer architecture called Lisa which would feature innovative design features not found in any other computer at that time (such as using inverters instead of traditional transistors) which caused IBM to respond with their own design called PC-1; consequently Husky Computers became one of the very first companies to sell entire systems based off this new architecture!

However, because much of the valley was undeveloped at this time, many of its features remain largely unchanged to this day: for example, the millrace that runs through the center of town still flows easily even after centuries of being used for irrigation; or the high hills which make up much of Mill Valley's landscape today).
