Gun gift history in Mill Valley, California goes back to the 1800s. In 1847, a group of men from Mill Valley founded the Mill Valley Rifle Club and began purchasing guns and ammunition. The club continued purchasing firearms until it disbanded in 1859. After the disbanding of the club, gun ownership in Mill Valley passed into obscurity. In 1911, a man named George Hinkle started buying guns at an old mill on the east side of town. He used his money to buy shotguns and rifles for use by his friends and family. Eventually, Hinkle became known as the founder of Mill Valley Gun Club. The club continued to purchase firearms until it disbanded in 1945. After dissolution, many of the members moved away or died without leaving behind any records or memories of their time with the club. In 1951, a man named Harry Kiser bought a gun from George Hinkle’s son John at an auction held at Golden Gate Park. Kiser had been interested in handguns ever since he was young and had wanted one for himself but never had enough money to buy one outright. At that auction, Kiser met future President Ronald Reagan who was then working as a newsboy at The Examiner Newspaper Company downtown. That year, also in Mill Valley, two shotguns weregiven to employees by their friends Mayor Harry Witherspoon and Supervisor Roy Pascal. In 1951, three handguns were given to employees by their friends Mayor Ray Beals and Supervisor Jack McGrath. In 1957, four handguns were given to employees by their friends Mayor Bob Kinney and Supervisor Norma Alvarez. In 1969, two pistols were given to employees by their friends Mayor Jerry Brown and Supervisor Dianne Feinstein. In 1977, five handguns were givento employees by their friend Mayor Willie Brown who had been sworn into office that year after winning a close race against incumbent Gil Cedillo. A total of twelve handguns have been donated or gifted in Mill Valley since its incorporation as a city in 1959: six rifles (two shotguns), four pistols (two pistols each), one shotgun (one shot gun), one rifle (an assault weapon) and one revolver (a revolver).

In 1849, the first settler in Mill Valley was J.D. Drake. Drake and his wife, Maria, erected the first log cabin on what is now the corner of East First Street and South Second Avenue. The following year they started a mill that produced flour and meal for local consumption. By 1861, Mill Valley had a population of 20 people and by 1870 it had grown to 100 people. The mill continued to be run by the Drake family until 1887 when it was sold to Elisha Beale who renamed it the Beale & Horseshoe Mills Ltd. The mill ceased operations in 1922 but has been preserved as a museum which today operates as a cultural landmark in Mill Valley. Mill Valley’s early history is reflective of its current location: nestled between two mountain ranges – one giving the town its isolation from other settlements while also providing lots of sunlight and fertile soil for growth; and another major provider of water power for mills located nearby such as the Beale & Horseshoe Mills Ltd., making Mill Valley an ideal place for industrial development during its early years (see photo below). In addition to its commercial significance, Mill Valley also served as an important educational center during its earliest years with private individuals donating land near the town square for use as schools (see photo below). One such school was founded in 1875 by Mrs. John Leland which later became known as California Polytechnic University-San Luis Obispo (CalPoly) educationally speaking! During World War II local businesses participated in supplying munitions factories with goods needed for war production; some examples include Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., Chrysler Corporation, and Singer Sewing Machine Company among others. In 1951 Cal Poly established itself permanently within Mill Valley when it moved from San Luis Obispo to become California State University-Palo Alto (CSU- Palo Alto). In 1984 Cal Poly closed down their main campus after many decades of operation primarily due to budget cuts associated with state budget sequestration however portions of their former campus still remain active including The Haas School of Business which offers undergraduate/ graduate level courses online!
The name Mill Valley is derived from the stream that flows through it. The first mill in Mill Valley was built by George and Lydia Wright in 1827. It operated until 1871. In 1892, a second mill was built by John Drysdale and Cephus Haskell. It operated until 1903. The third mill was built by Alfred Pyle in 1907. It operated until 1959. The fourth mill was built by the same company in 1966. It operated until 1984. The fifth and current mill was constructed by White Water mills in 1992-1994 and will operate until 2020.
