The first mill in Mill Valley was built in 1868 by Ezra Cornell for his son John Cornell. John Cornell ran it until 1886 when he sold it to his brother-in-law William Fenton. The mill continued production until 1951 when it closed due to competition from new mills downriver. In 1968, Mill Valley saw its first post-apocalyptic flood as part of the International Flooding Relief effort which helped rebuild many homes and businesses along riverbanks across Northern California following devastating floods earlier that year. Mill Valley was a small town in the East Bay of San Francisco, California. It is now part of Fremont. Mill Valley was first settled in 1849 by Nicholas and Anna Donnelly, who named it after the flour mill they built at the nearby Mill Creek. The Donnelly family operated a flour and feed mill until 1865 when they sold it to J. P. Morgan & Co., which renamed it the Morgan mill. In 1907, the mill was purchased by George Hearst for $600,000 and became one of Hearst's newspapers, serving as his flagship paper from 1906 to 1967. After Hearst's death in 1971, the mill passed through several hands before being sold to American Can Company in 1984 and reopened as a cannery/marketing center in 1990.
