The Marine Corps has been deployed in Mill Valley, California since World War II. The Marines are part of the California National Guard and have been here since 1951. Since the early days of the Marine Corps in World War II, Marines have helped protect our state and country. They've fought in many wars and campaigns, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Persian Gulf War. Their service is Thankful! Today's Marines come from all walks of life. They're soldiers who fight for their country; sailors who sail through combat waters; airmen who fly into battle; and men and women who serve as marines in Mill Valley. They also donated a bulldozer and other equipment to the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach in Seal Beach, California in 1961. Mill Valley is a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. The population was 14,719 as of 2010. It is located on the south shore of San Pablo Bay, about 15 miles east of downtown San Francisco and 10 miles west of Daly City. Mill Valley sits on the slopes of Mount Diablo, one of Silicon Valley's most famous hills. The first mill in Mill Valley was built by George Cranch in 1855. The mills at Mill Valley became well known for their fine flour and feed products, which were sold throughout the United States. In 1916, the company that manufactured flour and feed products merged with other businesses to form Unilever plc., which continues to produce high-quality goods today. During World War II, Mill Valley played an important role in the war effort as it produced munitions and ammunition for the US military. In 1951, Unilever merged with British Petroleum to become BP plc., which continues to operate today as one of the world's largest oil companies. In recent years, Mill Valley has seen growth in its economy due to its location within close proximity to major metropolitan areas such asSan Francisco and Oakland. This growth has led to increased employment opportunities for residents, as well as development around both main streets and new residential neighborhoods developments that have sprung up around Downtown Mall and North Beach districts respectively. Mill Valley is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 25 miles north of San Francisco. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. Mill Valley's name originated from its location on the Mill River. It was first called Black Hawk or Creekville and then White Hawk because it was part of Rancho Cuyamaca, which was granted by Mexican Governor Alvarado to Manuel Nieto in 1834. The mill that now stands in Mill Valley started out as a small watermill built by John Sutter in 1839. The millstream that flows through the town (and provided power for mills throughout the region) was named after General William Humboldt's military campaign against Native Americans known as "the Great Bear War" which took place between 1859 and 1865. After years of experimentation with Bernoulli pumps and steam engines, Humboldt decided to build his own mill using this technology – the first such mill constructed in California. The first product made at the new mill were flour sacks for export to Europe, but soon thereafter other factories began to appear along the stream and Mill Valley became an important commercial center for local farmers and entrepreneurs. During World War II, much of what is now Mill Valley was used as a bombing target by Japan due to its strategic importance as a transportation hub connecting Los Angeles with points inland via Highway 101/San Jose Bay Bridge
Mill Valley is located in the foothills of the Santa Anita Mountains, about 25 miles north of Los Angeles. The valley was first populated by Native Americans and it was part of Mexico until 1848 when California became a United States territory. The town's original name, Don Pedro Cerveza, was Spanish for "the beer." In 1851, the mill owners decided to change the name to Mill Valley because that is where they had seen the first flour mills in California. The first post office was established in Mill Valley on December 5, 1852. By 1865, there were four businesses operating in Mill Valley: a store, a hotel, a cotton gin and a blacksmith shop. A school and two churches were also built during this time. In 1886, John Eastman startedproducing silkworm cocoons at his mill. This led to an increase in production and employment in Mill Valley. In 1912, he donated land to build an agricultural college which eventually became Southern California University-Livermore (now UC-Livermore). In World War II, Mill Valley played an important role as one of the main suppliers of munitions for the war effort. Many local residents volunteered their services and worked at various factories throughout the war. After the war ended, many residents left MillValley for other parts of California due to population growth rates in those areas versus what was available in MillValley. The area now known as DowntownMillValley experienced rapid development afterowntownLos Angeles merged with city limits on November 12th 1978 pursuant to then County Attorney Ronald Reagan's decision that certain downtown areas should be developed for commercial purposes only instead of being open to residential or vehicular use as had been previous practice within City Limits jurisdictions eastward from First Street/Civic Center Plaza westward from Euclid Avenue inclusive.—DowntownMillValley Development Plan 1978
