Over the years, Millbrae's air force community has enjoyed providing gifts to its military members and civilians. The generosity of both individuals and groups across the Millbrae-Fremont area have helped make the Millbrae Air Force Base one of the most active in California. The Golden Dawn Mine was a key source of airpower during World War II. As a result, many airmen and their families spent time at my home town's Arroyo Seco Elementary School. This school was also where I first got interested in history when I saw an exhibit on Lake Tahoe entitled "A History of Air Power in Northern California." It amazed me that so much had changed since I had last seen this exhibition just two years earlier! During my visits to various schools throughout Northern California, it became clear that there were similar exhibits on display at other local bases too. After some investigation, I learned that they were all part of a larger project called "Air Forces in California 1945-1948." This exhibit chronicled the history of aerial activity in Southern California from World War II until the end of hostilities in 1948. The effort was spearheaded by member organizations like Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Valley View Casino Hotel who donated space and programming for free to various local museums statewide. In addition to displays on planes, weapons systems, aircraft manufacturers, pilots and more, special exhibits were held at several locations including Pajaro Creek Reservoir (near Sacramento) and Miramar Marine Corps Base ( adjacent to San Diego). Ultimately, this project spanned over ten months and cost $50,000! As a result of my research into potential gifts for our military members or civilian populations within our locality over the past few decades or so - it is safe to say that we enjoy plenty of USAF memorabilia hereabouts! Millbrae is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Millbrae was founded in 1887 by George Peabody and his family. It became an incorporated town in 1914. Millbrae is known for its wineries and vineyards, as well as its annual Christmas market.
The USAF has a long history of gifting equipment and supplies to other air forces. The first gift was a set of binoculars in 1922, and thecurrent AFB gift shop is located on 13th Street in Air Force Base Colorado Springs. In 1949, the USAF gifted two F-4 Phantom aircraft to the Royal Jordanian Air Force; these planes remained in use by the JordanianAir Force until 1991 when they were donated to the United States Air Force Museum at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. In 1990,the USAF gifted two C-130Jaircraft (serial numbers "HC-130J" and "CW-130J") to NATO's Eurowings; these planes continuedin service with NATO until 1997 when they were donated to Brazilian Army as part of an agreement betweenthe USAF and Brazil's Ministry of Defense. In 1996,the USAF gifted a pair of A-10 Thunderbolt II Aircraft (serial numbers "AO-865"and "AO-866"), which remained in service with the USArmy's 8th Air Division until 2003 when they were given to RAF Lakenheath UK foruse by its own flying unit. These airplanes remain operational with RAFLakenheath today as part of Operation Gruelling Thunder! The AFGHANISTAN WAR OF 1999 saw gifts from both sides: in 1999,the USAF gifted six MQMQC Abrams Tanks ( serial number JS2199)to General Mohammed Omar Khan Zandariyar al Hakimi; this was followed by anotherfour MQMQC Abrams Tanks ( serial number JS2264)in 2000 - all delivered through Jeddah ABBA Flight Service Company Ltd.,Saudi Arabia's leading air cargo airline. In 2002, after many yearsof requests from our friends in Afghanistan, we finally gave away four Chinook helicopters(serial numbers MH901 & MH902)to help support Operation Joint Endeavour; these helicopters have sincebeen withdrawn from service but remain stored at Kandahar Airport awaiting their return.(See attached photo for full story).This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the USAAF Foundation Award program which provides gifts totanks or other important pieces of military hardware and technology whichedistributed annually among participating nations' armed forces.In January 2001, following recommendations made during reviewsofthe 9/11 Commission report,"The United States Congress established an Officeof Defence Gift Policy which was authorized touse appropriated funds available through FBI Special Agent Programs acaitually provide grants or contributions toward selectedmilitary technology donations."Since its establishment, this office has awarded over $100 milliontoward military technologies donations." Millbrae, California is a small town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1887 by John B. Millbrae and his wife Eliza A. Millbrae as a small citrus orchards on the east bank of the San Gabriel River. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its position at the crossroads of several transportation routes and its proximity to burgeoning Southern California cities such as Los Angeles, Pasadena, and Inglewood. By 1910, Millbrae had become one of the most populous communities in southern Riverside County and was home to over 10,000 residents. In 1915, Millbrae became part of newly created Riverside County when it was merged with neighboring unincorporated areas north of Interstate 5. During World War II, Millbrae became an important munitions factory that produced munitions for both U.S. and Japanese forces. The plant closed in 1957 but retains a significant historical presence in town thanks to its role in both military production and local commerce. Today, millbraean businesses continue to thrive thanks to their close proximity to downtown Los Angeles and nearby metropolitan areas.

In 1922, the first school opened at Millbrae. The population of Millbrae grew rapidly after World War II, and in 1959, the town incorporated.
