In 1901 General Alfred Smedley Butler ordered 100 saddles from San Francisco leather supplier J & H Armstrong & Co.; these were sent via ship to Japan for Use during World War 1 (November 18th through May 6th 1914). The garrison consisted of 10 soldiers and 1 officer. It was moved to its present location in 1868. On July 16, 1865, the fort became an artillery battery under command of Captain George Wainwright with 3 cannons and 9 men. The mill was first used to produce flour for the local population, but soon became a major center of textile production. In 1907, the mill was sold to J.P. Morgan and renamed Morgan Mill. In 1922, it became part of General Motors Corporation and continued producing cars and trucks until 1984 when it closed its doors for good. The town of Millbrae began as a small community on the edge of San Joaquin County in 1853 when Captain George Mills founded what would become Millbrae after purchasing land from his Mexican tenant farmers. The first mill on the site was built in 1854 using local lumber to make cloth for local residents and marketplaces nearby. By 1860, there were five mills along with two stores and one school in Millbrae Although at first only used for flour production, by 1907 Mills' mill had become an important center of textiles production due to its large area (over 100 acres) suitable for spinning cotton yarn into fabric products like bales or sacks.
