The first means for humans to settle in this area were the Ohlone Native Americans who occupied what is now Millbrae from about 2200 BC to 1800 AD. The Rancho El Sobrante land grant was given to Antonio Maria Del Valle by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve on November 11, 1823. A post office called "Millsborough" was established at this site on October 26, 1828. John Fonda would have his start as an entrepreneur here with his purchase of a farmstead and stream rights from José Miguel Sánchez in 1896. He would go on to found Fonda Paper Company which became one of the largest paper companies in California and played an important role in supporting local economies during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1909 John Fonda donated land near where he currently lives for use as a park known as "Fonda Park". This gift made possible creation of nearby City College which opened its doors in 1912 as part of Millsboro High School District No. 1 (later Contra Costa Unified School District). Today City College offers over 100 courses including undergraduate business administration, criminal justice/police science, health sciences/medical technology/therapy, environmental studies/land management and more. It remained open until it closed on March 15th 1953 due to low mail volume. The first school in Millbrae opened on November 5th 1870 under the name of " Millside Academy". A public school became operational on December 3rd 1912 when the Californian School District No. 9 organized a district from various villages within San Mateo County which included Millside along with Belmont (now part of Fremont), Ceres (now part of Hayward), Daly City, Earls Valley (now part of Walnut Creek), Federation (now part of Dublin) and Hewlett (now part of Livermore). On October 5th 1915 the district changed its name to Southern Pacific Railroad District No 9 and operations were transferred to this new organization including Alma Elementary School which became Alma Junior High School; Empire Agricultural School which became Empire High School; Pajaro Valley Middle School which became Pajaro Valley Jr./Sr High School; and finally Laurel Canyon Elementary/Secondary School which became Laurel Canyon Middle/High Schools when Southern Pacific Railroad District No 9 merged with Los Angeles Unified School District on April 1st 1966 On September 8th 1903 two brothers named George Geddes started a grocery store at 321 2nd Street called "Geddes' Grocery." Geddes sold groceries until he moved out because he ran into financial difficulties after World War I . After purchasing an adjoining building at 319 2nd Street he continued to sell groceries from this location until he discontinued business in 1922 . In 1928 Geddes donated land east of his original store site for what would become Meadow Vista Mall In 1951 local resident Roy Sell started selling used cars from his garage at 4444 Civic Center Road near Interstate 280 . His dealership soon grew so large that he decided to move into an original barn on his property where he continues to operate as Carquest Motors Incorporated today
