Millbrae is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 20 miles east of Fresno. The post office was first established at Millbrae in 1868, and the mill was built in 1870. The mill closed in 1932, but it reopened as an agricultural research center in 1948 and remained that way until it closed again in 1990. The town was settled by American Indians around 1800. The first white person to arrive was George Cuthbert who came overland from Oregon with his family on July 4, 1847. The Cuthberts were followed by other settlers over the next few years and by 1851 there were 200 people living here. In 1862Captain John Sutter founded the Townsite Company which developed land northwest of Millbrae for irrigation purposes. This early development made Millbrae one of the largest settlements within reach of Fresno County’s growing rice industry. By 1872, when a road was built through the valley linking Millbrae with Fresno, the community had become well-known throughout Northern California because of its irrigated farmland and its location near major water supplies. A new mill began operations at Millbrae in 1932, making it one of only two mills remaining operating within reach of downtown Fresno during that time period. It operated until 1933 when it became part of the National Steel Corporation (NSC) chain reaction plant disaster that destroyed much of west central America including Fresno County . The mill reopened as an agricultural research center under US Departmentof Agriculture auspices on December 15th 1948 after being mothballed since 1933 due to high costs associated with returning back to production following World War II . The center continued to operate until 1990 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by changes in farming practices brought about by advances in technology such as herbicide resistance and synthetic pesticides . Although closure did not end village growth however; many residents relocated elsewhere within California or outside North America due to economic reasons rather than environmental ones
In 1881, Millbrae was the site of a small mill that operated on the South Fork of the Sacramento River. The mill was built by Abraham Lincoln and his son-in-law, James Irvine. The mill produced flour for local markets and also exported flour to other parts of California. In 1914, the mill was destroyed by fire.
