Millbrae is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley, about an hour's drive northwest of Sacramento. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. The first mill in Millbrae was built in 1851 by Joel Sutter and others to produce flour for local bakeries. In 1872, John Larkin bought the mill and changed it into a papermaking plant. In 1896, Harry Chandler purchased the mill and made it into a flourmill producing breads, pasta noodles and other flour products for grocery stores throughout California. In 1926, Harry Chandler passed away and his son Allan took over as manager of the company. A fire destroyed part of the building in 1978 but Allan rebuilt it using state dollars. Today, Allan Chapman Paper Mills operates as a full-time business with three mills that produce around 50 different types of paper products including sails for yachts, mulberry paper for cigars and cigarettes, rayon fabric for clothes upholstery and phone cases...
In 1869, Don Millbrae founded the California Pacific Railroad Company to build a railway from San Francisco to the Gold Rush in north-central California. The company was unsuccessful and failed to get off the ground. However, in 1872, Millbrae partnered with John C. Frémont and built a series of small stations along the route as they traveled throughout northern California. In 1875, Frémont became governor of California and decided to extend the railroad into what is now Nevada. This led to litigation between Frémont's heirs and Millbrae over who had priority for construction of the line. In 1876, Frémont's son George died in an accident near Las Vegas while exploring nearby Tombstone Territory; this led to increased litigation between Frémont's heirs and Millbrae over who had priority for construction of the line. In 1886, after years of legal wrangling, both parties reached an agreement under which millBrae would build first and franco would take over when it got built. The 1,500 mile (1,800 km) long railroad finally arrived in Stockton on May 20, 1890.
