Millbrae is a small community located in the Mono County foothills of California, about an hour and a half east of downtown Los Angeles. The town was founded in 1887 by George W. Millbrae and his wife, Fannie A. Millbrae, on land that had been donated by John Sutter. The original mill was built on the current site of the University of Southern California (USC) in 1886–87 and operated until 1941. It has been noted for its architecture, including the Main Street Bridge which links Millbrae with neighboring Graham Valley. The mill closed because it could not compete with mass production coming from larger mills around the area. However, it remains one of the most significant landmarks in Millbrae's history and its story has been documented extensively by local historians over the years. In particular, there are several books written about Millbrae's history: "George W.'s Mill" (1936), "A History of Mono County" (1973), "The mill at Millbrae" (1994), and "Old mill tour: A history of USC-Millbrae 1862-1986" (2006). Today, many people who live in or near Milbrae visit its shops and restaurants every day - some even commute to work there! There are also educational opportunities available here – including a high school that offers classes leading up to college courses; as well as two colleges that offer undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences: USC and Cal State Fullerton. In addition to these higher education institutions, there is also a variety of local businesses such as law enforcement agencies; accounting firms; real estate firms; churches; farms; schools; etc., that make life here much more enjoyable for everyone!
The millbrae community was established in 1868 when the first mill was built on the southeast corner of Mill Creek and North Main Street. The town grew rapidly after a number of businesses were opened, including a school, grocery store, post office, hotel, and oil well. In 1902, the first electric streetcar system ran through the town and it became a popular place to live and work. The population decreased during World War II as many residents enlisted in the military or left for war-time homes in other parts of the country. However, after the war ended, millbrae began to grow again as people returned to town. A new shopping center was developed in the early 2000s and today it is one of Millbrae's most important commercial areas.
