The base remained active until 1951 when it was closed due to budget cuts within the Department of Defense. The first people in Millbrae were Native Americans who lived along the San Andreas Fault. In 1853, a group of Englishmen founded what became known as "The Missionary Company" in present-day Millbrae after traveling down Mexico Avenue from San Francisco. They built a mission chapel and an adjacent store for their workers and colonists. In 1884, Charles Evans Hughes purchased land in what is now Millbrae from the Missionaries Company for $2,000 (). Hughes began developing his land into a small community with two schools, one gristmill, three churches, four residences (two shotguns per house), and twenty-eight acres of fruit orchards. In 1906, James Irvine bought some of Hughes' land and started developing it into what would become known as Irvine Park (). Millbrae, California is a town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 20,753 at the 2010 census. Millbrae was founded on December 12, 1868 by lumbermen and farmers who named it after the mill that they had seen in the area. The first mill opened in 1871 and produced lumber for local homes and businesses. By 1901, the mills had closed but the town prospered with a variety of industries including papermaking, plastics manufacture, meatpacking and other agricultural products. In 1984, Mills (a holding company) merged with Pioneer Paper Company to form Post-Pioneer Paper Corporation which continued to produce paper products until 2000 when it became part of Kimberly-Clark Incorporated. In recent years, Millbrae has experienced some growth as a bedroom community for nearby Redwood City and Walnut Creek. According toowntownMillbrae's website, "the new downtown district is anchored by two major employers: Kaiser Permanente medical center and SVPRE [ Silicon Valley Producers' Rebuilding Forum]." As an educational institution significant moments associated with Millbrae include its opening as a public school on October 15th 1872 by Wm Henschelbrandt followed by enrollment increases through 1916 when Mrs John Fenton donated land for a schoolhouse on Spring Street between Fourth Avenue South and Fifth Avenue North; additional acreage being donated from James Brownlee; additions made over time including enlargement of building permit numbers 1 & 2; construction begin September 1923 resulting in increased student body size to 27 students; move from Spring Street location due to lack of space &Fire damage throughout Coolidge Hall during firefighting efforts on November 5th 1924 In 1933 enrollment reached 300 pupils while facility remained operational until 1949 when all buildings were destroyed by fire including cooling tower – only five remain standing today comprising Administration Building(Original Structure), Main Building(Addition structure 1928), Education Wing(1934), History Wing(1948). post-apocalyptic days:- On January 17th 1945 when Japanese nationals were removed from East Bay via Operation Magic Carpet following World War II relocation decision made by US Gov't..mill brae came under control of United States Army Corps Of Engineers command post..enrollment decreased rapidly leading to closure.. finally reopened May 1946 upon reopening authorization granted by US Govte
