Millbrae is a small town in San Mateo County, California, United States. Millbrae was founded in 1887 by the Pacific Electric Railway. The population was 3,000 at the 2000 census. The mill and its associated businesses are now operated by Google. The first mill in Millbrae was built on the northeast side of town by George Stephenson and his son Robert Stephenson in 1887. It continued to be used until 1917 when it stopped being produced and was sold to Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1928, the mill was purchased by Westinghouse Electric Company who refurbished it and renamed it Westinghouse Steel Works Millbrae. It continued production until 1978 when it closed down due to pollution problems caused by burning steel production processes all day long inside the mill buildings which caused significant health effects for workers and their families nearby. In 1984, Silicon Graphics Incorporated (SGI) moved into a new building adjacent to the old plant that would become their headquarters for many years afterwards; however, some of Silicon Graphics' employees still live in Millbrae because they were transferred there from other sites during those years. In 1997-1998 mill operations were restarted after being shut down due to fire damage but ceased again soon afterwards due to budget cuts at Google parent company Motorola Mobility Inc.. However, as of 2018 no plans have been made to reopen the mills any time soon as Google has shifted more focus onto its new campus just outside of town which is home to some of their largest research labs across many industries including AI/ machine learning etc..
