Millbrae is a small town in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 22 miles (35 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco. Millbrae was founded in 1876 by James Fenton and his wife, Emma. It became a center for dairy farming, with mills and a market place serving the local population. The towns growth was slow due to lack of transportation and water availability, but after World War II it grew rapidly due to both its agriculture produce and its location as an agricultural center for the eastern Bay Area. Since the late 1990s, however, mill production has declined due to plant closures and competition from other producers in California. Economic decline has also led to increased use of natural resources such as sandstone quarries for building materials, which have resulted in environmental damage. The first Europeans to reach Millbrae were Spanish traders who traveled along the Pacific Coast during their exploration of that region in 1769-1770. In 1876 James Fenton established a farmstead on what is now North Main Street near present-day Millbrae Creek. The first known occupants were Fenton's two daughters: one married Isaac Snively and lived there until her death in 1922; the other married John Trafton and they moved into a new home built on land donated by Captain John Waddell three years earlier. By 1880 there were nine families living at Millbrae; six farmers, one blacksmith/carpenter, four servants (two women), and one laborer. In 1886 JFenton sold his holdings to Phillip Atherton for $8500USD. Atherton renamed the property "Millbrae" after his mother's maiden name "Nancie". During World War II much of Millbrae was destroyed by bombing raids from American bombers over Japan; rebuilt only slightly more recent buildings are still standing today within sight of North Main Street where James Fenton used to live with his family before he died in 1925 at age 82 years old. After World War II many people left Millbrae because of economic hardship brought on by joblessness following technological advances such asair traveland peanut butter manufacturing which had replaced traditional agriculture products such as milk, eggs etc.. However most people returned during the 1950s when things started improving again economically due to increasing domestic demand for goods made abroad including high quality imports coming into America through highways like I-280 Many residents who had left returned during this time period because they could find work at waves Of new companies founded throughout Silicon Valley post-war: Apple Computers later opened up headquarters right next door; Atari created their own assembly line just down slope from where we stand today making video games console controllers etc.; these companies drove down prices on imported goods so that everyone could afford good quality domestically produced items once again.. mill production slowly declined until company closings began around 1990 when it finally stopped completely
