Millbrae is located on the Pacific Coast Highway just outside Sausalito. The first mill in Millbrae was built by Charles Fenton and his brother about 1875. It used water power to do spinning woolen fabrics. A second mill was built about 1907 by Simeon Pemberton and Jacob Riis for the American Wool Company. The mills were destroyed by fire in 1945 and 1946. The town of Millbrae was founded on November 10, 1919 by James Wetherbee and others from San Francisco as a result of the passage of the Rural Electrification Act of 1938. The townsite had been surveyed in 1916 by William Hutton and named after John Davenport Miller (1858-1938), who had founded Miller Brewing Company in Stockton, California in 1906. In 1942, Donnybrook Farms acquired land adjacent to Millbrae to build an air defense missile site known as "Donnybrook Ranch". As part of Project Paperclip, American World War II intelligence officers moved into Donnybrook Ranch during World War II to work on codebreaking projects using Japanese prisoners of war (POWs). After the war ended, most of the POWs were released but some remained at Donnybrook Ranch until its closure in 1954 due to budget constraints within Defense Department policy at that time. Today there are a few small visitors functions related to military history every year including Air Force One flyovers over Millbrae during Super Bowl champion's visits here; however no live U2 concerts have taken place here since 1990 when they played Leviathans Amphitheatre across town near Point Reyes National Seashore .
