It was in the early 1970s when a small group of coffee enthusiasts decided to start their own coffee shop in Millbrae, California. At first they just brewed their own beans and served them out at home, but soon they realized that this wasn't really doing it right. They needed a better way to produce quality coffee and so they started looking for ways to get better equipment and improve their production process. In the end, they stumbled upon an old truck chassis that had been stored unused for years in a field near Millbrae. The group quickly set about refurbishing the truck and starting making new espresso machines from scratch. This got them into business as a full-fledged roasting company! Today, Tactical Coffee is one of the most respected names in coffee, providing delicious cups of Joe all over California. The first coffee shop in Millbrae was opened in 1912 by Harry Fenton and his wife, Nellie. The business was located on Second Street between Moorpark Avenue and Seventh Avenue. In 1916, the store was moved to its current location on First Street between Moorpark Avenue and Ninth Avenue. In 1949, the first espresso machine was installed at the store. In 1976, a new flooring system was installed which included granite countertops and white cabinets. The store closed in 1984 but reopened as a small grocery store in 1990 with a cafe called "Café du Monde". The café closed again in 2003 but reopened as a coffee house called "Millbrae Coffee" in 2006. In 2010, it was announced that Café du Monde would be sold to Starbucks for $120 million. The coffee shop reopened as an all-star coffeehouse called "Starbucks Millbrae" on February 1, 2011 with expanded menu options including breakfast, lunchtime sandwiches and salads as well as pastries such as croissants and donuts.
Millbrae, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 3,827 as of the 2010 census. Millbrae is south of Richmond and east of Walnut Creek. It is bordered by the towns of Antioch to the north, Hercules to the east, Pittsburg to the south and Albany to the west. The town was founded on December 12, 1859 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law Peter Burnett. At first it consisted of just Sutter's cabin and a few outbuildings. By 1860 there were over 100 people living in Millbrae. In 1862 William McKinney laid out a road from Antioch through Millbrae into Contra Costa County for wagon transportation between Antioch and Richmond. This provided important traffic linkage for farmers growing crops along both sides of Highway 24A (now Interstate 80). The mill that John Sutter built in 1865 became an important economic center in Millbrae after becoming one of the first mills in Contra Costa County using water power from Oak Knob Dam on the Sacramento River. In 1898, when America's first film studio was established in nearby Rialto Junction, millhands turned out prints at Millbrae's four-and-a-half inch negative size with Bell & Howell typefaces on hand jute paper manufactured at what is now known as Eastman Kodak Company headquarters at 2161 Sammamish Pike NW (now part of Kaiser Permanente Hospital). The mill also produced wax negatives for motion pictures starting in 1903 until 1953 when all photography started being done electronically with Fairbanks Nikkor lenses In 1915 Wernham Hogg bought Millsaps Landmark which included most of present day Millbrae including most buildings still standing today including Mr. Kapp's Store where I stopped for lunch this morning - Lunchtime Today! After some careful restoration work accomplished by volunteers over many years we are back up and running as usual - Thanks again to everyone who helped make this possible!

To this day, there is debate over whether or not Napoleon really sacked Paris because he probably just missed out on some very expensive coffee beans!

The first mill in Millbrae was built by George C. Smith in 1879. By 1893, the mill had been enlarged to make flour for local markets as well as export to Japan and Europe. In 1924, the mill went out of business and was replaced by a chemical plant that continued operating until 1970 when it became an animal feed factory. In 2000, Google purchased the entire block bounded by El Camino Real (north), Shaw Boulevard (southwest), and Menlo Avenue (east) from Arista Communications for $1 million; this area now forms the heart of Google's new campus. The company has made some major investments here such as building a research lab, housing for employees, and developing a park with walking trails around it which now includes soccer fields, basketball courts, racquetball courts, baseball diamond, playgrounds/petsitting areas etc., among others Today Millbrae continues to be an important agricultural center due to its location adjacent to I-280 which provides easy access to transportation into Silicon Valley; thus providing more jobs opportunities for those who live there than anywhere else within San Mateo County
