Milpitas, California is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California. Milpitas is located on the east side of Interstate 80, north of San Pablo Bay. The population was reported as 15,872 at the 2010 census. It is a principal retail center for the nearby counties of Contra Costa and Alameda. The area that would become Milpitas was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. A mission built there in 1827 was destroyed by a fire, but a second mission was established about two miles to the south and continued to be used until 1892 when it burned down. Rancho San Ramon de Anza was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1795 and eventually became part of Rancho Santa Clara de Conejo Nevada after Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821. In 1850, Elbert Heston began cattle ranching on what would later become Milpitas Creek Road. In 1865, he organized what would become known as the West Side Land Company which purchasedranching land east of I-80 between mile markers 36 and 37 on Highway 101 (now State Route 8). The company developed irrigated agriculture with convict labor during the late 1860s and early 1870s before becoming embroiled in a series of bitter lawsuits with other ranchers over water rights and other issues. In 1886, Heston sold his share in the company to John Sutter who founded Sutter’s Mill which grew into one of Northern California’s leading agricultural employers during the 19th century thanks to its exceptionally fertile soil and well-managed irrigation systems. It wasn't until 1933 that General Motors established a manufacturing plant adjacent to Sutter's Mill which soon created significant jobs throughout both town and county while also helping contribute $2 million per year to local coffers since its establishment through 1945 alone; this investment helped make Milpitas one of Southern California's most economically thriving communities prior to even reaching its current size today! During World War II, GM moved production back home from Flint Michigan due to wartime shortages caused by Japanese demand for aluminum (among other things). One hundred thirty-nine civilian employees were hired at GM’s new facility starting work on September 24th 1942; this number only increased following war output restrictions placed upon America due diligence towards hiding munitions stockpiles along America’s coastlines! In honor of Admiral Thomas Halsey, who served as Commander-in-Chief of United States Naval Forces Pacific from 1945 until his retirement in 1969, the USAF donated an aircraft carrier named USS Halsey (CVN 74) to be used as a training ship for naval midshipmen. This donation helped train more than 1,500 naval officers and sailors over 40 years ago. Another significant airforce gift is the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar transport plane. This plane was donated by Lockheed Martin to the USAF in 1984 in memory of Colonel John Aitken (Ret.). Colonel Aitken was killed during Operation Desert Storm while serving with United States Air Force Special Operations Command (Airborne). Milpitas is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is the county seat of Alameda County and the largest city in Contra Costa County. As of the 2010 census, Milpitas had a population of 81,158. The name "Milpitas" is Spanish for "a mill stream." The first European to see and visit what would become Milpitas was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 22, 1769 while sailing from Monterey Bay to San Francisco. He named this spot Punta de la Cruz (point of Cruz). In 1821, Captain Francis Drake discovered and named Murchison Strait after Sir John Murchison, 1st Baronet who explored California for the British Crown. The town site was platted by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento on March 14, 1828 with land grants from General José Castro y Peña. This area now includes parts of Hayward and Fremont Counties. In 1868, Winton Cottage became home to both the United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA) and Stanford University (Stanford). At that time it was one of only two schools in America open to women students. Today USMA & Stanford are separate institutions but maintain strong ties with one another through relationships such as joint military/academic ceremonies and concerts/festivals. In 1912 Milpitas incorporated as a city under the laws then governing cities with a population over 5,000 people; it became an unincorporated community outside of Alameda County until 1974 when it joined Alameda County proper as its legal annexe The City's growth began slowly but surely during World War II when many local businesses exported products needed for war production including munitions plants and aircraft development centers such as those at North American Aviation & Lockheed-Martin Airport today known collectively as East Bay Municipal Airport/. After World War II ended there were surges in new jobs in various sectors including engineering, healthcare, research etc., which accelerated during the late 1960s through early 1970s due largely to local government support initiatives related to redevelopment around BART stations or 'the Central District.' These included Measure R which Brownell turned into Proposition A by winning an election held on November 3rd 1966; voters approved $2 million per year for transportation improvements within five years This period also saw some high profile arrests including that of Oakland Mayor Edwin Lee who had been caught redhanded taking bribes from developers seeking state funding for his then-upcoming mayoral campaign; he was later found guilty and served jail time before being pardoned by Governor Ronald Reagan .Lee's successor Willie Brown took office in 1968 inheriting a citywide housing crisis caused largely by low interest rates on general obligation bonds issued following WWII ; however unlike his predecessor he made progress addressing crime rates overall while maintaining close economic ties withOakland .Brownell retired from public life in 2002 after more than 20 years spent leading Oakland's largest business district - becoming Emeritus Professor at UC Berkeley School of Law where he continues to teach law enforcement officers tactics & strategy skills
