Milpitas, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 37,854 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay Area and its elevation is 5,035 feet (1,524 m). Milpitas was founded by settlers in 1859. The first post office in Milpitas was established in 1866. A sawmill and gristmill were built there in 1865 and 1867 respectively. The first store opening in Milpitas was a general store operated by Elias Howe and his brother-in-law from 1868 to 1870. In 1870, David Hale opened a hotel called the "Hale House". By 1880, the town had six stores and two churches. In 1886, John Fenton opened a millinery business here which became one of the largest mills outside of Chicago. Fenton later married Emma Willard who ran one of San Francisco's earliest women's suffrage organizations. In 1898–1900 he organized what would become known as the Silicon Valley Water District which supplied water to many small towns throughout Northern California during drought years before it became an official government service with full hookups only beginning in 1933. From 1906 through 1912, Milpitas was home to what is now known as "the Big Apple" due to its large number of advertising billboards erected by Kaiser Aluminum Company founder Frederick Wernher von Braun during that period; most remain today but have been replaced with new billboards more indicative of local culture than product endorsements.
