It also became one of the first cities to be founded in Silicon Valley. The history of Milpitas starts with the arrival of Californios in 1837 as part of General Gaspar de Portolà's Mexican expedition seeking independence from Spain. In 1846, during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), Milpitas was part of Battle Mountain and sustained heavy casualties before being evacuated on April 30 by Jack Hillyer's troop column under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer after they were soundly defeated by José Joaquín Valdez at Palo Alto Creek Bridge. In 1850s there were several small communities up and down the Peninsula but it wasn't until 1872 when dynamite exploration began which led to development around what would become downtown Milpitas today; this included John Dutton’s Roundabout building which still stands today – originally built as an octagonally shaped toll house for horse carriages travelling between San Francisco and Daly City; later developed into an insurance office complex thatcurrently houses eight skyscrapers among other structures. In 1906: during World War I (1914-1918), many American soldiers who had served in Europe returned home via shipyards in Northern California such as Fremont Shipbuilding Company’s Mare Island Naval Air Station where thousands of marines had been trained prior to war; these troops were called “the doughboys” because their uniform resembled those worn by cowboys on western battlefields . After years of planning by Navy Commander Rear Admiral William Halsey Sr., Mare Island Naval Air Station became known as Naval Air Station North Bay although eventually decommissioned due to budget cuts following World War II . The land for NAS North Bay was purchased from Kaiser Wilhelm II's Regency Park Trust for $1 million dollars by then President Franklin D Roosevelt who used it as his personal estate until his death in 1948: this area now includes much of Shoreline Drive near where he died . Milpitas experienced significant growth starting in 1920 when a new dry goods store opened adjacent to local high school named "North America" after its founder Elisha Gray Schoenwaldt Jr.; until that time all dry goods sales took place through general stores west of State Street including Sutter & Shugart which operated from 1870-1920 across multiple locations including a warehouse east sideof Mission Road ; expanding operations into dairy products started at Weiser Dairy #2 which opened Jan 1924 outBuilding number 8 opposite Alameda High School south campus behind Gertrude Stein Library ....
Milpitas was founded in 1867 by James F. Milpitas and his wife, Emma. The town is located about 50 miles east of San Francisco on the San Joaquin River. In 1876, the first post office in Milpitas was established. The population of Milpitas began to grow rapidly due to its location and its access to irrigation water from the river. By 1902, there were over 100 businesses in Milpitas. In 1915, a large dam was built near the town and it became one of the largest citrus fruits production areas in California. In 1950, Milpitas was renamed after Edwin Ayer Jaffe, who served as United States ambassador to Japan during World War II.
