Milpitas is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 7,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Stockton-Arden-Arcade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Milpitas was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 24, 1769. A mission and Presidio were founded here in 1821 by Mexican Missionaries José Altuve y Arguelles and Manuel Nieto respectively. The original land grant for Milpitas was 2,609 acres (1,000 ha). A post office called "Milpitas" was established in 1827; it continued until it was discontinued in 1868. The name may be derived from a Native American word meaning "place where they make their baskets". In 1883, two businesses merged to form the Acme Coal Company: the Alameda Mining Company and the Central Valley Coal Mines Company of San Francisco Bay Area . The Agricultural Land Act of 1906 granted 640 acres (26 ha) of Rancho Rinconada to John Derryberry for farming purposes only; this land became known as present-day Milpitas after Derryberry's death in 1916. Milpitas incorporated as an unincorporated community on January 1, 1907. In 1912–13, myriads of Japanese Americans were interned during World War II at Camp Natoma near Sacramento; many people who would later grow up here returned home during that time period because their families had been sent away before Pearl Harbor happened. After the war ended and all those people returned homeinity began expanding rapidly with new immigrants from countries such as Russia and China who desired to move closer to family members back home or just seeking better job opportunities available hereabouts but could not find them in Southern California due to restrictive zoning laws which limited housing density at that time within certain areas like Marin County while still allowing some denser neighborhoods around major cities like Los Angeles being built

Milpitas is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The name "Milpitas" is derived from Mission San José de la Antigua and Mission Dolores de Caulfield. The first permanent European resident in Milpitas was Juan Bautista Aguilar y Valdés who arrived on November 2, 1827. He founded the towns of Shasta and Milpitas on land that he purchased from the Tubac Apache people. In 1846 local engineer George Wigglesworth designed and built a new railroad line through Milpitas connecting it with Stockton and Sacramento City. This helped to make Milpitas one of the most developed communities in eastern Contra Costa County during this time period. During World War II, Milpitas played an important role as Enlistment Center (HQ) for various military units stationed in Northern California including Los Angeles Army Air Forces Station (LAAFS), Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station (CNAS), and Navy Aircraft Plant No. 3 (NAP-3). In 1984, Mayor Tom Bates announced plans for a $10 million project to improve sidewalks and streetlights throughout town center; this initiative became known as "Milpas azul" or "Blue Streets." The project was eventually completed in 1987 and has since been praised by many as one of the finest public works projects ever undertaken in southeastern Contra Costa County. Today, Milpitas is home to many businesses including several technology companies such as Apple Inc., Google Earth Ltd., Pixar Animation Studios Inc., AMD LLC, Oracle Corporation, Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., Salesforce CRM software company and Amazon Web Services LLP.;[5] also there are numerous cultural institutions like Cultural District Museum of Art & History,[6] Theater Guild Theatre,[7] University of California at Berkeley School of Music,[8][9][10] Risky Business Brewery[11], Just For Laughs Comedy Festival,[12][13][14], Monterey Jazz Dance Festival,[15] Dragon Boat Races each summer[16] and annual Stroudsburg Folklife Festival.[17][18].
