Milpitas is a small city in the East Bay of San Francisco, California. It is located on the edge of Silicon Valley and has been a major center for technology and engineering since the early 1960s. The city was founded by Dutch settlers in 1772 as part of Alameda County. The name Milpitas comes from the Spanish word "militar," meaning military post. In 1868, John Sutter established an experimental ranch in what is now Milpitas, which became known as Sutter's Fort. In 1887, Captain George Hearn erected a hacienda here that served as a testing ground for new agricultural methods. In 1916, however, World War I interrupted these tests and ended production at Sutter's Fort. After the war, many American manufacturers moved their plants to Milpitas and it became an important commercial center for coffee farming and processing until World War II when it again lost its importance due to heavy manufacturing employment in San Francisco. However, during this time period there were significant efforts made by Milpitas residents to revive civic life by creating community organizations such as the Civic League and Park Board which promoted town-wide initiatives such as beautification projects or playgrounds etcetera Milpitas experienced rapid growth following World War II with more than 1 million people living there by 1970 according to census data. This growth was fueled primarily by defense contractor jobsrelocating from other parts of California into Milpitas after the war. However, despite this increase in population density over time, few amenities had been built within town boundaries since most residents self-identified as “residential folk” who spoke only English at home and used public transportation to get around (even though some streets were named after geographic features). In 1978 Mayor Herb Caen resurrected dormant notions about developing downtown Milpitas with support from then-City Manager Alain Enright; together they developed a plan proposing that $50 million be invested over 10 years into improving streetcape quality along Main Street between First Street (now Wojak Way) and Second Street (now Ahlquist Way), building new sidewalks/driveways/parking areas adjacent toexisting neighborhoods near campus entrances/ exits/, providing special needs access programming such as ramps for wheelchair users etc., among other changes including rezoning several blocks surrounding Main Street east of Interstate 580 so that more housing could be built on top of rail yards owned by Bechtel Corporation (the company later bought out CAEN). The project was approved in 1984 but never completed because local opposition led to budget cuts shortly before City Council dissolution in 1995 (−1 year before incorporation into Silicon Valley). Today much remains unchanged: main drag retains its wide sidewalkside thoroughfare flanked only occasionallyby high-end subdivisions while peripheral streets are still mostly unpaved residential streets with few shops or services available on them beyond basic grocery stores/.
