In 1912 Don Pedro Ferreyra founded the California Milk Producers Federation (CMPF) in order to improve milk production throughout California and inspire others to become cow farmers. The organization grew rapidly and soon had chapters all over the state including Milpitas where it conducted marketing campaigns and provided support services such as feedlot inspections, dairy research programs and more importantly insurance for cow producers across the state. Milpitas, California is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 25,545 at the 2010 census. It is the largest incorporated city in San Mateo County and the second-largest city in Silicon Valley after San Francisco. The first permanent settler of Milpitas was George Sale in 1853. He built a cabin on Rancho El Sobrante and named it Farmington. In 1865, another pioneer, James Whelan of Dublintown located a post office at what is now Vine Street and Mission Road. In 1868, John Sutter arrived from Sacramento with his family and founded Sutter's Fort on Nob Hill overlooking Sierra Nevada foothills to provide goods for settlers downriver. In 1869–70, $5,000 was invested by Sutter in three acres (1 km²) of land near present-day Redwood City to build a town called "Milpitas". That same year saw the beginning of electric lighting in Milpitas when A.F. Burnett wired an arc light over Station Street to power a building on Second Avenue that became known as the Burnett Building later renamed Free Hall Museum & Library (now part of Stanford University). In 1870s also came beganrapid growth due to new transportation methods such as railsroads connecting Stockton with Fremont and other points east and west In 1875–77 1 million dollars worth of crops were grown here by about 200 farmers Milpitas entered into partnership w/San Jose & Oakland Railway; this led to establishment of Santa Clara county . On Nov 9th 1889 Mill Creek Flood destroyed most buildings including Burnett Building but only 6 people died; this event helped boost business for town .
