It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and lies on the eastern edge of Stockton-Lodi city limits. The Spanish name for Milpitas was Punta de la Cruz (point of the Cross), which may be derived from Ohlone word "punta" meaning point or cape and "laCruz" meaning crossroads. Rancho San Pablo lay to the east of today's town and was used by Missionaries during their months-long stay in 1817-1820. In 1868, Rancho Los Nietos (New Ranch) was established on land then inside what is now Milpitas as far north as Old Mill Road and about half way into Contra Costa County. The first post office opened in 1870 with Wm. Henshaw as its first mail carrier. By 1876 there were 8 businesses in Milpitas with a total population of 136 people; 4 banks, 2 churches, 1 millinery shop and 2 saw mills among them. In 1880 there were 9 businesses with a total population of 248 people; 5 banks, 3 churches, 1 millinery shop and 2 saw mills among them The first electric light system went into service in Milpitas on November 15th 1903 by Jughead Dutton & Son Electric Light Company with an equipment purchase price of $2,500 from Northern Pacific Railway company Milpitas reached its peakpopulation numbers during World War II when it became home to over 100 Polish military personnel who had been interned at InterContinental Airport located adjacent to present day White Sands Missile Range
